Fiction Paper #2 Assignment Description Due Date: Thursday, December 12th
Your Task: SHORT STORY I AM CHOOSING IS : THE STORY OF AN HOUR
Write an analysis of one of the short stories we discussed in class, focusing on ONE of the following elements: setting, point of view,

theme, symbolism, character, or the author’s voice (which includes tone, style, and irony). To complete this assignment, you should carefully read pgs. 1919-1922 in Part 4: Writing, and then do the following.
1) You must decide on a thesis. Your thesis will be argumentative in nature. For example, the thesis in the sample paper says the following: The narrator’s tenuous hold on reality and his wild shifts in mood indicate that he is insane and, therefore, that his point of view is untrustworthy.
Once you have decided on your thesis, make sure that all content in the paper is related to that thesis.
2) Support your view with specific references to the story you are analyzing. The author of the above thesis then spends his paper proving that the narrator’s point of view is not trustworthy by giving examples of his tenuous hold on reality and insanity. In other words, to complete this paper, you must prove your thesis in detail, using quotations and specific references from the story to support

your ideas. Explain what in the story makes you feel the way you do.
3) Discuss the impact of the element on the readers understanding of the story. For example, if you are analyzing the setting in Greasy Lake, you would address how understanding the way the setting provokes the action in the story is crucial for the reader to understand Boyles point. You might also discuss how any change in the setting would change the storys meaning (like day vs. night).
Requirements:
The paper should be 2-3 full pages typed, double spaced, with 1 inch margins all around (you need to change this on your computer).

You should also use a 12 point size, Times New Roman font.
You should have an introduction that includes a clear thesis, proper paragraphs, proper punctuation and grammar, and a conclusion

that wraps up the paper
Make sure that when you copy quotes from the stories, you put quotations marks around the material and put the page number in

parentheses. If you are just referencing parts of the story without quoting, you still must use page numbers, but no quotes.
In the upper left corner put: your name, ENG124, Fiction Paper #2, the date
