Purpose and structure
Some questions to ask yourself:
??Did I answer the question?
??What is the purpose of the essay?
??How well have I succeeded in communicating that purpose?
??Is the essay well focused?
??Did I write a clear, specific, thesis statement (overall argument)?
??Does the material in the body paragraphs support and develop my thesis?
??Have I edited any irrelevant or redundant material?
??Have I structured my essay clearly?
??Does it have an introduction and a conclusion?
??Is the order of body paragraphs logical or is my argument all over the place?
??Have I followed the Assignment Style Sheet?
Revising content
Introduction
Your introduction must:
??introduce the topic
??indicate the purpose
??contain a thesis that states the main idea of the essay.
Body
Read your essay and ask yourself the following questions:
??Does each paragraph develop one complete idea in support of the thesis?
??Does a topic sentence clearly state the main idea of each paragraph?
??Does each paragraph develop the argument and support it with evidence?
??Are paragraphs linked and do they flow smoothly?
Conclusion
Don’t skimp on the conclusion.
??Does the essay end with a separate paragraph that summarises the main points and confirms or qualifies the thesis?
??Don’t introduce totally new material in the conclusion.
Proofreading
Purdue University Writing Lab suggests you check the following aspects of your writing when proofreading:
Punctuation
??Are commas and end punctuation used correctly?
Quotation marks
??Are direct quotations enclosed in quotation marks? (“xx”)
Apostrophes
??Are apostrophes used correctly?
Spelling
??Have you checked words you are unsure about by using a spellchecker and a dictionary?
??Don’t rely only on the spellchecker
??Is capitalisation correct?
??Be consistent. If you wrote ‘organisation’ in one paragraph you can’t write it as ‘organization’ in the next paragraph. BUT use the English Oxford Dictionary spelling of words – not US spelling where z is used instead of s: e.g. ‘organisation’ versus ‘organization’. However, in quotes you must use the spelling in the original document.
Numbers and measurements
Are numbers and measurements expressed correctly? Write numbers one to nine; use numerals for numbers over 10 unless writing financials/measurements.
Referencing
??Is all quoted or paraphrased material from outside sources referenced correctly in your essay?
??Have you included a bibliography or reference list?
