RESEARCH PROPOSAL Topic (Attitude of Home Healthcare Workers towards Elderly) Background of the Study Research studies from various disciplines, especially within the healthcare field, posit that role ambiguity, burnout and role conflict are some of the contributory factors associated with low job performance and job satisfaction. These factors are related to how healthcare workers perform and render care and services to their clients and health workers. Burnout, for example, has been a constant mediator and strain for establishing an effective relationship between patient and providers. Within the context of home health agencies, attitudes of health workers towards the elderly are not different. Previously held studies show that there is a high prevalence of elderly abuse reported in home health agencies as a result of underperformance, unsatisfactory job outcomes, burnout and role conflicts. Taking the following into consideration, there is an underlying factor/s associated with how healthcare professionals act towards the elderly. Research Question The research question the researcher seeks to answer in this proposal is: ?What are the attitudes of healthcare workers working on home health agencies towards the elderly?? Drawing upon the Emotional Labour Theory, this paper will also assess and evaluate the factors that constitute to the gaps in the literature. Framework of the Study According to Dijk & Brown, the relationship between negative job outcomes and emotional labour are partly the result of lack of clarity with regards to the measurement of emotional dissonance and conceptualization. These perceptions has led to the formulation of the Emotional Labour Theory by Hoschild, since there should be a well-defined and managed emotional labour calls for workers in order to channel their negative emotions and attitudes away from their work and the source of conflict. This is the main goal of the Emotional Labour Theory, which will be used for this paper. Gaps in the Literature and Methodology The continuous channelling of negative emotions within the work process posits a challenge in the healthcare field, and properly addressing the source of these problems is important to deliver quality healthcare services. It is however unclear whether or not the work in this area continues to elucidate operationalization and conceptualization of the constructs of the Emotional Labour Theory. For example, examination of the relationships between burnout, role conflict and ambiguity, and emotional labour is not yet clearly determined. These constructs can then be applied within the issue of healthcare workers? attitude towards elderly clients, and in this case, will be used for this study. For the purpose of this study, the researcher will be considering semi- structure interview, (qualitative Research method) from different health worker in Aberdeen. Firstly questionnaires will be giving out followed by interviewing. The number might not be representative as the researcher will be interview just 15 health care worker in the Aberdeen environ. Another point to consider is, there will be no workers that will express their true emotions regarding the services they provide to the older people. Despite the fact that some older people are non-compliant and non-cooperative, workers will never express to anyone their true emotions. The perceptions of the health workers will be obtained through answering a series of questionnaires and interview that is patterned from the Emotional Labour Theory. This will serve as the empirical basis for obtaining data, in order to compare the results with the previously found studies; however this time, the context is within the field of home health agencies. If the patterns are similar to how the Emotional Labour Theory have been associated with burnout, role conflict and ambiguity. Conclusion and Relevance of the Study This proposal discussed how burnout, role conflict and ambiguity play a significant role in the emotional distress and attitudes of workers towards job-related issues. Since the literatures presented assessed different factors constituting to the effects of job-related factors to the work attitudes of healthcare workers, there is still a gap existing on how the Emotional Labour Theory can significantly relate to the topic, especially in taking care of elderly in home health agencies. Implications and relevance of this proposed study can be used as a basis on how to effectively handle burnout, role conflict and ambiguity in a positive way, in order to facilitate job empowerment and competency among healthcare workers. Finally, the findings in the study can be used as a valid and reliable reference for future studies, having the same purpose.
