Chapter 1 – 1100 words

The finally how many you will be reviewing, and what are they; research, articles, editorials, or Government papers. Then you need to tell you reader the themes of the literature review and in what order you will be covering them.

The purpose of a review of the literature is to shape and support the research question. In a simple way it is like drawing a picture off you subject, consider it as a house what do you need to tell the reader about the house and what could you omit if you were trying to sell it. This part of the dissertation helps set the scene for the rest of the work. Always go for primary sources. Never use Wikipedia or similar e.g. net doctor. You may need to use Government initiatives and other relevant guidelines or international literature. Add in other sources as appropriate e.g. letters to professional journals. Look for structure and a logical order ? think in themes. Think headings, which should be you themes, set a word limit early on and stick to it on final drafts. Accept that there is a limit to what you can include. This section gives a constructive argument that forms a rational for the rest of the work. Demonstrate skills of critique so details of studies must be included or what the article is about, your reader should not have to guess. Remember when constructing each theme, use the papers that support that theme, compare and contrast them and then conclude by saying what that theme has contributed to the whole. This may be the longest section in a research study, but needs to be balanced. The reader should be convinced through this section that the study is worth doing so it must support you aim/objectives and your choice of research approach.
