The aims of this activity are to focus your thinking on issues of public health and the community’s expectations of safe drinking water, and to get you interacting with that community.
Organise a tearoom debate with a group of work colleagues or a BBQ discussion with friends and family about the following statement relating to direct and indirect potable recycling. Ensure that people for and against the idea make comments.
“The future of sustainable water supplies lies in recycling water for potable uses”
Prepare a short report (200-400 words) highlighting some of the key issues which your debate uncovered, specifically relating to public health and community perceptions. Save this Word document to your computer. Cut and paste the text from your Word document below as a discussion topic by 11:59 pm on the 25th March. Your work will be visible to all students.

Prepare for your debate by gathering information on different perspectives of the debate.
One resource to start discussion is the Australian Government’s document ‘Using recycled water for drinking: an introduction’ produced by the National Water Commission.
Don’t however limit yourselves to this document. I would like the debate to be wide ranging and to cover a variety of different perspectives. Credit will be given to those who have worked to explore the breadth of the debate from all sides. If you do find some good resources, share them with the rest of the class by sending a message on the discussion tool.

Consider the responses which people have contributed to both your tea-room/BBQ discussion, and to the postings on the FLO Discussion site.
• After listening to the arguments did you change your personal view on the issue of potable recycling in any way?
• What compelling argument(s) did others put forward which caused you to stop and think (even if you didn’t finally change your mind on the issue)?
• Report back to the work colleagues/friends who participated in your original debate, share some of the perspectives from the class discussion. What do they think about the comments that were made and the points that were raised?
• How might we hold this discussion in the community so that the general public could be more informed, particularly with regard to public health, as the debate into potable reuse develops over the next decade.
