In this exercise, you will identify the individual artistic elements use in various shots. We will use shots in the “Framing Hank Quinlan” sequence from Touch of Evil found at the following two links:
1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whzleWt8tlU (YOU CAN USE THE ENTIRE CLIP)
2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olyDMVJ8-C0 (JUST USE THE FIRST MINUTE)
The characters in the scenes are Vargas (guy with mustache – Charlton Heston), Pete (the older deputy), Hank Quinlan (the obsese police captain – Orson Welles), and Tana (the fortune teller – Marlene Dietrich).
Do both Parts A and B of each question below. For Part B, you are addressing the Dramatic Focus of the shot you’ve chosen. The definition of Dramatic Focus is: what the director emphasizes in each shot. In each shot, the director gives us information about the story events and the characters. The director also wants us to think and feel certain things about those events and characters. The director will arrange the artistic elements in each shot according to the dramatic focus s/he has established. Two (2) points each, unless marked otherwise.
