Assessment #2 – Essay
You are a firm believer in evidence-based practice, and are aware that in your own professional area, there are many health interventions that lack high level evidence. Select a health problem relevant to your own area that you would like to study, and using your new found skills in epidemiology, design a study to address the problem. The essay should be in the form of a study proposal. Any of the study designs discussed in Modules 4 and 5 are acceptable as long as it can be justified. Students are strongly advised to email the Course Coordinator with details of the topic they intend to address in their essay, in order to ensure that it is acceptable before they start. If you are having difficulty in choosing a suitable study, please contact the course coordinator who will provide you with one.

The points below show the required essay structure and marking guide. If you wish to vary the structure from that shown below because of an unusual study design or research problem, please discuss this first with the Course Coordinator. Note that resubmission of this written paper is not available.
Background – Broadly describe what the study is all about, 250 words (2 points)
Literature review – Justify why this is an important area to study. You should have 15-20 references taken from the scientific literature, 1000 words (10 points)
Methods
Objective/Aims – What are you trying to achieve/test? 30 words (2 points)
Study design – Provide details of your proposed design. Make sure you talk about randomisation, blinding etc if these are applicable, 300 words (6 points)
Target population – Which underlying population would you want to generalize your results to? 20 words (1 point)
Inclusion criteria – Inclusion criteria specify who you would like in the study, 30 words (1 point)
Exclusion criteria – Exclusion criteria specify why some people who would normally be included cannot be, 70 words (1 point)
Outcome variable(s) – The outcome variable is the measure you are trying to compare between study groups. Try and choose one primary outcome variable. Others would be secondary, 100 words (3 points)
Other data measured – What other data will you be collecting and why? 100 words (2 points)
