Choose a painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art that was created between 1410 and 1510 in Italy. Be prepared at the Final Examination to visually analyze the work, as well as to critique it according to Alberti’s criteria of quality. In other words: what would Alberti have approved or disapproved in the work? Your analysis should be sufficiently thorough fill at least a bluebook. Alberti’s text invokes a range of artistic choices, from color, to perspective, to expression; do not choose paintings that have no obvious relevance to the standards discussed in Alberti’s text. A useful book for consultation is Sylvan Barnet’s A Short Guide to Writing about Art (Prentice Hall). You may bring outlines and notes to the exam but you must turn them in with your paper.
