Welcome to History 11183. In this seminar students will explore the relationship between the rise of capitalism and the integration of Sub-Saharan Africa’s labor and natural resources into the global economy in the nineteenth and twentieth century. We will be especially interested in two distinct but related issues: First, we want to explore the role of African labor, minerals, and agricultural products for the economic growth of the Global North. Second, we want to examine how oversea markets and foreign influences shaped local economies and ‘working lives’ in different regions in Africa, and explore how Africans confronted these changes.
In the process of engaging the issue of the seminar, we will also discuss how this long history of African involvement in the changing global economy reflects economic structures and developments in African countries today.
