During this unit, you will establish and work with various kinds of research (from your field notes and other writings, as well as from library research), and you will eventually compile a rich, detailed depiction and analysis of key issues, questions, or ideas related to the community you’re researching. Essentially, we’ll work as ethnographers, seeking to compile thick descriptions of the places, people, and cultures we’re looking at to write a community analysis essay. Much of the work of this unit is focused on seeing, and re-seeing, and then looking again as an active, careful, ethical researcher. In other words, we’ll be using various lenses and genres of writing (interviews, maps, artifacts, reflections, library research, and so on) in order to get at some temporary understanding of what your community is all about.
