In her lecture, “The Danger of A Single Story,” Chimamanda Adichie contends that there is a single story at work- the Euro-centric model- in understanding the African or African American cultures. This single story is particularly dangerous when it becomes the standard that society uses to judge and understand the Other. In this essay, students will examine the notion of the single story and its dangers as well as literature that attempts to correct this flawed point of view. Throughout this essay, students should explain what the single story is and how the single story has proven dangerous historically and in literature. Student should also identify examples of literature that seeks to correct that flawed perspective by presenting an alternative viewpoint on the lives that African Americans live.
