The midterm for this course requires a little brainstorming and then the writing of an essay in which you offer specific examples from the literature we have read to support your thesis about the aspects of the American character as it is presented in the literature we have studied so far.
Your first task is to make a list of the attributes and deficits of character that have been presented in this literature.
When we read The Devil and Tom Walker you were asked to look at the direct characterization and the indirect characterization used by Irving in presenting Tom and his wife. I suppose we might also take a look at the characterization of the Devil as well.
Did Washington Irving tell us what the devil was like or did he allow the devil’s actions to give him away?
As you go back and look at the characters who have peopled the stories and the real life individuals who have shared their thoughts and philosophical inclinations as well as their observations about the North American continent and it’s peoples, what aspects of character have you seen in those storytellers?
What are the aspects of character that are indirectly obvious in both accounts? Answering this question about the selections we have read so far this semester is your first job.
Look at the literature we have read and make two lists. Brainstorm the characteristics. Note in which literary selections you found each characteristic.

When you finish your list, choose a few characteristics from each column and use them to form a thesis statement.
What seems to be true about the American character?
Write your essay using these characteristics and examples from the literature to support your thesis that these are aspects of the American character.
Obviously, there are going to be contradictions. Deal with them in the body of your paper.
Include passages from the selections we have read to support your thesis.
