Each student will write and present a policy paper (10-15 pages) on a social policy issue of their choice. The format of the policy papers should follow the “Steps in the Policy Analysis Process” (posted on Blackboard). Below is the basic format of the paper:

• Statement of Problem
o Students will define the problem and use evidence to show why it is a policy problem. Student will use outside research provide an overview of the problem and its effects.

• Policy Alternatives
o Students will state what policy option should be considered to address the problem. A full description of the policy alternatives with details is required in this section. The policy paper students should have a minimum of three policy alternatives.

• Statement of Evaluative Criteria
o Which three criteria would your group use to evaluate the policy? Provide a justification of why these criteria are best suited to evaluate the policy. Please refer to the list of evaluative criteria posted on Blackboard for guidance.

• Assessment of Alternatives
o How would you assess the feasibility of each policy alternative? What kinds of analysis would your group perform to judge, which alternatives work and which do not? Apply the evaluative criteria your group chose to each of the proposed alternatives. In this section you must show the probable impact of each alternative based on the evaluative criteria your group chooses.

• Policy Choice
o What policy would your group choose? Why? This should be a detailed justification of the policy option your group recommends.

Formatting Requirements

• Aside from the textbook, assigned articles, and documentaries, the paper must contain a minimum of ten outside sources.
o Four peer reviewed journal articles
o Three newspaper or magazine articles
o Three think tank or government reports
This is just a minimum feel free to use as many outside sources that you want.

• The paper should have five sections (see above). The paper should resemble something that you would submit to your supervisor.
• All papers are to be in Times New Roman 12-point font, with 1” margins
• All papers must include in-text citations and a bibliography both in APA format. The bibliography is not included in the page count.
• The maximum page limit is 15 pages. If the paper is longer than 15 pages, I will not read past
page 15.
