The MBA is an advanced degree in which the student learns how to use theory and business principles to solve business problems. Throughout the MBA program, you will be exposed to various functional areas of business in isolation (such as accounting, finance, marketing, etc.). In the business world, however, these functions do not exist in isolation. It is necessary to study them separately in order to fully grasp the principles of a discipline and develop competencies to manage businesses and make decisions, but it will not be until your final classes in Strategy and the MBA Capstone that you will be asked to synthesize this knowledge. In the Strategy class, for example, you will be asked to analyze how the characteristics of a company’s market shapes its strategic choices, and how organizational structure must be designed to support those choices. In the Capstone, you will use financial and product information to make choices about strategy, production, and operations. But one cannot run before learning to walk, so first we will be focusing on building a basic foundation, one course at a time. This course focuses on the field of management and human behavior in organizations.

Even though at first you will be dealing with business administration in terms of its functional areas, it is good from the beginning to learn to view organizations as "open systems," where the subsystems of the organization interact with each other, and the whole system interacts with its environment.

For a PowerPoint presentation discussing open systems, the field of management, and its challenges generally, read Introduction to Organizations.

A good place to start this course is by examining the effect of the changing environment on organizations. The United States is continually becoming more diverse and business more global in its operations. Neither customers nor employees fall into a single demographic category. This reading will give you insights into how Ciscoone of the countrys most successful companiesis developing a next-generation business model by leveraging the diversity of its workforce.
