A new food additive (preservative: Preservalot) is being developed by a food company. Prior to the widespread exploitation of this compound its safety will require assessment. How would you test the toxicity of this compound to ensure its safety prior to its widespread use? Use knowledge of the regulatory controls that exist to control food additive use to inform your testing strategy.

Identify the types of toxicity tests that should be conducted, and their purpose, considering the requirements of the regulatory controls for food additives. Extensive details of the experimental design are not required, but you will have to consider certain aspects of the experimental design, including but not limited to the following; the types of models that you will use, exposure conditions and endpoints investigated etc.
