Case study 1: Sarah
Sarah is 30 years old. Sarah experienced a very difficult marital break up 2 years ago, during which she reports experiencing high levels of stress, low mood and anxiety. About 12 months ago, Sarah was date raped by a colleague. She had taken him back to her house for a drink, and when he attempted to initiate sex had refused. He used his body weight to hold her down, and held her throat while raping her. After the rape, she did not want to press charges, as she was afraid that the police would not believe her. She left her place of work, finding alternate (but less enjoyable) work elsewhere.
She comes to see you with a range of concerns. She is having difficulty sleeping, feels wary and afraid a lot of the time, and is experiencing flashbacks. She feels angry with herself for not reporting the rape, and for ‘allowing him’ to make her leave her job. She has difficulty imagining herself being happy in a new relationship, as she suggests that the idea of being touched by a man ‘makes her flesh crawl’. She has not dated since the incident. She is growing increasingly isolated, having only one close friend who lives some distance away, and a sister, with whom she has a close relationship, but who she has not told about the incident.
