The weekly papers should attempt to synthesize the assigned readings. However, they should not be a summary of the week�s readings, but must be a critical reading of them. I do not want book reports. All weekly papers MUST be between 5-7 pages. You are expected not only to read the readings, but to digest, critique, and compare/contrast them with additional readings. These additional readings can be ones from this class, other classes you have taken, or books and/or articles you have read outside of graduate school. There are no intellectual restrictions on any additional readings you include in your papers. Your papers should discuss the author(s)�s theory, the conceptualization of the problem, the operationalization of variables, the hypotheses proposed, the assumptions made, the methods used, and the findings reported. How do this week�s individual readings fit together? What are the overall arguments? What does this week�s reading add to the literature? What have you taken from the readings? What are the implications of the topics covered in the readings?
You could also advance some additional research questions either raised by the authors themselves or by your interpretation of the reading(s). For example, what do these authors fail to consider or look at that might prove to be a useful research endeavor? Finally, evaluate what they have done. Has it been worthwhile to read? How might the findings be changed if part of the research design is somehow changed? What ramifications does the work have for our understanding of conflict and the resolution of conflict? How might their work be applied to other situations and how well would their understanding of the process aid in understanding another? Might their theory and/or evidence be time-bound or limited in some way? Have the authors left unconsidered something essential to understand whatever process it is that they are examining? Are the data and methods used appropriate given the research question? Make sure you substantiate any critical claims you make.
