??Trailheads? for your essay prompt: At one point in Shepard?s True West, imploring Lee to let him accompany his brother back to the desert, Austin exclaims, ?There?s nothin? real down here, Lee! Least of all me? (59)! ?Down here? references Los Angeles, but only a couple of scenes earlier?and, just as adamantly?Austin dismissed Lee?s wilderness-driven screenplay concept: ?There?s no such thing as the West anymore? (43)! It seems for both men, neither the city nor the wilderness offers a clear sense of personal identity (Remember, on page 59, Lee also admits, I?m livin? out there [in the desert] ?cause I can?t make it here!?). Perhaps it can be argued, then, that True West is a play that dramatizes the tension of men trying to maintain identity as both city- and wilderness-living have become empty abstractions, no longer steady sources of personal representation or contentment. To deepen your readers? understanding of this ?identity crisis,? address the following objectives in whatever order you consider most effective?
Discuss the qualities you associate with Austin and Lee early in the play as well as how these chatacter traits shift and/or merge as the play progresses. What factor(s) seem to be the agent for each man?s change? As always cite and/or paraphrase corroborating examples from the drama?s ?evidence.?
Discuss what you think Shepard?s title refers to. What ?truth??even if just the authenticity of certain tensions?is revealed by the play? Again, reference specific dialogue, plot events, setting dynamics, etc. to better illustrate your reasoning.
What are we left with at the drama?s conclusion? Compare/contrast the ending of the True West to the ending of Unforgiven to deepen reader understanding of the significance of Shepard?s final scene.
Some thoughts about your ?audience? and your introduction: Assume a readership familiar with some basic thoughts about stereotypes associated with western narratives. But, they?ve only thought about this line of critique mostly within literature/film set in conventionally ?Old West? places like 19th century frontier towns, etc. (sound familiar?).
Moreover, your audience is just beginning to think about how clich?s associated with Literature of the American West (L.A.W.) may be closely linked to the psychological ?landscape? of human identity construction?and further, that contemporary perpetuation of certain clich?s may be impacted by the economic and lifestyle conditions of 21st century life. Introducing your readership to some of these ideas before you hit your Body Section would be a good idea?feel free to use any of the passages I?ve provided in lecture to help you articulate some foundational thoughts about ?identity? construction and its treatment (or, lack thereof) by L.A.W. texts.
I do have the book but how do I upload the book?
