Ondaytwofthetrainingprogram,Carlosbeganwithalectureonbrain- storming.Hethenhadtrainesparticipateinagroupbrainstormingexercise. Eachgrouphadtobrainstormasmanyideasasposibleforimprovingcom- municationinthescholboard.Afterwards,thegroupspresentedtheirideas folowedbyadiscusionofthemostcreativewaystoimprovecomunica- tionwithteachers,students,andparents.
Onthethirdayofthetrainingprogram,Carlosbeganwithalectureon activelistening.Trainesthenparticipatedinanexerciseinwhichtheyhad todevelopamesageandthencomunicateittotheothertraines.Atthe endofthexercise,eachtrainehadtorecalthemesagesentbytheother traines.Thiswasthenfolowedbyadiscusionofhowtobeamorefective listenerandwithtipsonactivelistening_
Carlosendedthetrainingprogrambyhavingtrainesparticipateina comunicationgame.First,hehadtrainescompleteaself-asesmentof howtheysendmesagesandthechanelstheyuseforcomunication.Then groupsoftraineshadtodevelopamesagethattheywouldcomunicate totheothergiups.Eachgrouphadtodeterminethebestwayfortheirmes- sagetoreachtheothergroupsasacuratelyandtimelyasposible.Atthend ofthegame,eachgroupreadoutthemesagetheyreceivedfromtheother groups.Carlosthenscoredeachgroupintermsoftheacuracyofthemes- sagereceivedbytheothergroupsaswelashowlongittokforeachgroup toreceivethemesage,
Thegamewasalotoffunfortheparticipants,wholeftthetrainingpro- gramonahigh.Carlosthankedthemforatendingthetrainingprogramand encouragedthemtoaplywhattheylearnedintrainingwhentheyreturntonjoyabletrainingexperience.
Twomonthsafterthetrainingprogram,Carloswassitingathisdesk, thinkingabouthismetingscheduledfor2p.m,withthescholboardsuper- intendent-Hewaslokingforwardtothemetingwiththesuperintendent, knowingthathewouldbepraisedforthesucesfulinteractivecomunications programhehadesignedandelivered.
However,themetingwiththesuperintendentwentporly.Although someparticipantslovedthexercisesandgamesinthecomunications course,mostdidnotchangetheirworkbehaviour.Furthermore,areview ofthesituationshowedthattheoldproblemspersistedandcomunication remainedaseriousproblematthescholboard.Carlosdidnotknowhatto sayorwhatheshouldo.
Severaldayslater,Carlosaproachedseveraloftheparticipantswho atendedthetrainingprogramandaskedthemhowthingsweregoing,One participantlaughedathimandsaid,”Welthatwasalotoffun,buttraining istrainingandworkiswork.Besides,nothingeverchangesaroundhere.” Carlosaskedherwhatshemeantandshexplainedtohimthatsupervisors don’tgetitandcontinuetocaltheshots. L’heonlythingtheyknowabout comunicationisdownward,”shesaid.”Maybetheyshouldhaveatended yourtrainingprogram!”
