The trend analysis assignment addresses the time period of mid-September through the second week of November. The end result of your research will be an analysis presented in standard text format of about twelve-fifteen pages. This analytical study will address the general societal concerns regarding the influences of WEB and internet technologies on our daily lives. The introduction of your paper will identify the concerns as you have analyzed them from the most significant to the least significant. The body of your paper will provide your detailed analysis of the issues; potential resolutions and your projection as to the future status of the issue. That is, do you believe that the issue will be quickly resolved and fade away; linger on as an issue without any foreseeable solution; or do you believe that the issue will become more acute requiring greater attention. You must offer a rationale for your opinions. Feel free to reference the articles or any other source in your analysis. Lastly, your conclusion should summarize the issues for this period of time. Offer your insights as to whether this period (Sept-Nov) represents a typical level of concern; an increasing level of concern or a decreasing level of concern. Explain why?
The success of your analysis is dependent on the thoroughness of your data collection. You will collect the data from the popular press such as a variety of newspapers, popular magazines and popular media sites. You are welcome to use hard copy data or on-line versions. Example: you can use a paper copy of the New York Times or an electronic version. Please note, you must collect your data at regular intervals i. e. at least three times a week. Print (electronic sources) or cut-out (paper sources) the articles as you find them.
Analytical thinking is of a higher order cognitive function. It requires you to critically examine and synthesize data; determine patterns; develop original and logical conclusions; predict likely outcomes and defend your views.

Some tips for you to consider:
• Be very vigilant about your data collection and analysis! Based on current frequency of such issues in the press you should have no trouble collecting at least six articles a week. Please understand, your source documents are ‘primary sources’ which means they have not been reviewed and critiqued except by you. What you think you see is not always what is before your eyes!
• Organize your articles in one of two ways. You can arrange them by subject category i.e. education, crime, privacy, business, politics, war and peace, etc. Or you can arrange them by a person category i.e. children, elderly, teachers, parents, the poor, the wealthy, business people etc. There is not a preferred way. However, you must choose one and stay with it. Do not mix the two.
• You cannot state an opinion without supporting it. To do so is to make an assumption…and we all know about assumptions!
• The final paper will contain the text, an appendix of articles in organized fashion and a bibliography should you site outside sources.
• The paper will be free of spelling, typing, formatting and grammatical error. Spell check does not constitute proof-reading.
• The paper will be typed with one-inch margins on all four sides. Use standard font. I will be happy to review rough drafts until December 4th. The paper is due on December 17, in hard copy.
• Lastly, a word of warning, procrastination on an analysis assignment almost always leads to a shallow product. If you are having trouble getting motivated, let me know during the process, not after!
