Character in A Streetcar Named Desire
For our final research essay, you will examine two characters in Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire, drawing on the text, its film version, as well as outside sources in your discussion.
There is no doubt that Blanche Dubois is the protagonist of the story, the main character whose perspective is important to our understanding and experience of the play. However, arguments arise regarding which character is the ultimate antagonist in Streetcar. While Stanley Kowalski is certainly Blanche’s nemesis, she proves to be cunning, deceitful, as well as thoroughly manipulative of the people around her, including her sister and Mitch. At the same time, Stanley’s cruel, brute-like, abusive behavior is also apparent throughout the play, and his final act at the end solidifies Williams’ malicious depiction of the character. In your paper, you will argue who you believe is Williams’s antagonist.
Thesis: Your thesis should definitively state which character you believe is the antagonist of Streetcar, alongside the most compelling, argumentative reason or evidence you have to prove this claim.
Body: Throughout the essay, you will cite specific examples from the text and film to support your thesis assertion. Consider the following things:
1. Pay special attention to Williams’s stage direction; oftentimes, the playwright’s commentary on the character, including his or her appearance, action, and demeanor, is very telling.
2. Examine dialogue closely; A close reading of the characters’ words will reveal their overriding attitudes toward each other, and they may also divulge their ultimate intentions.
3. Pay special attention to the actors’ portrayal of the characters in the film version. Given our discussion of method acting and drama in general, you may be able to gain insight from the professional actors’ interpretations of their characters.
