The final project for this course will allow students to demonstrate their knowledge of children’s cognitive development and apply this knowledge to working with children to meet their diverse needs and abilities. The students will write an eight- to ten- page paper that outlines the development of a child from birth through age eight from both a theoretical and cognitive skill/ knowledge based perspective. Next the student will apply this information to assist teachers and parents who work with young children. The paper will address cognitive development in three sections: infants/ toddlers birth to two; preschoolers three to five; and early school age six to eight.
For each of the three age ranges the paper should address:
•Theoretical perspectives on cognitive development: Piaget, Vygotsky, Sociocultural, Social Learning, Information Processing, brain research
•Knowledge and skill: language development, memory development, perception, executive functioning/ problem solving, concepts of self, symbolic development, Theory of Mind, schooling
•Application: Plan two suggestions or activities for teachers and/or families as they work with each age group. Questions to think about include: What should children in each age range be doing based on their cognitive development? How can adults meet the needs of children based on differing needs and abilities?
The paper must be eight- to ten- pages in length, include at least five scholarly resources in addition to the course text, and be properly formatted according to APA style.
