Death penalty supporters and abolitionists alike agree that there are serious problems with the U.S. death penalty system. Though both sides may disagree on where the problem lies, both sides typically express similar concerns about the system’s fairness, equity in sentencing, and if it truly is reserved for the worst of the worst offenders. The purpose of this assignment is to answer the question, “If you could change one aspect of the death penalty system in order to improve justice, what would you change and why?” Within your answer you must 1) identify and explain the most important/biggest problem within the death penalty process (or the system itself), and 2) discuss, in your opinion, the single best reform possible to ensure that the criminal justice system is equitable and fair. Be sure to include why and how your reform will improve the system, the feasibility of your suggested reform, and limit yourself to one and only one reform. Be sure to consider the Constitutionality of your proposed reform; if your reform violates the Constitution, you will lose points. (HINT: Simply suggesting reducing the number of appeals violates the Constitution.) This assignment is worth 10% of your final course grade.
You may rely entirely on material from class to answer the question, but if you want, you may also supplement your response with additional information from other books, articles, or websites. If you use outside material, be sure to cite your sources. If you use class material, you do not have to cite it. Do not use direct quotes from any sources.
Paper format: Your answer should be at minimum 2 pages long. It should be as well written as possible; be sure to check your grammar and spelling. Answers should be double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font with one-inch margins.
You will submit your answer on Blackboard through SafeAssign. The submission location is the same as your previous assignments, but because this is going through SafeAssign, do not put your name or student ID number on your response! Your answers will be linked to your NetID through Blackboard, but federal regulations prohibit me from asking for any identifying information on your assignment turned in through SafeAssign. Grades will be based on:
1. If a problem has been accurately identified and explained.
2. How well your suggested reform would ameliorate the problem you identified and how thoroughly you have explained your reform.
3. The feasibility of your suggested reform.
4. How well you use class material to back up and support your argument.
5. The quality of your written response.
6. Your paper meets the minimum page requirement and adheres to the style guidelines.
