Visual Essay
We live in a very visual world, and visuals can oftentimes be more persuasive than writing. This assignment will give you an
opportunity to analyze a visual (advertisement, photo, campaign, public service announcement, etc.). You will examine various
components of the visual: composition, people/main figures, scenes, words, and tone. You will also analyze the rhetorical context to
understand the visual’s deeper meaning and significance.
Getting Started
Use the key components of the visual on pp. 679-681 to help guide you through the process. In your essay, you will want to
rhetorically analyze the following areas: composition of the image, people/other main features, scene, words, tone, and various
contexts.
Purpose
The goal of a visual analysis is not to analyze what a writer is arguing about concerning an issue, but to analyze how the creator of
the visual is presenting the argument. You’ll do this by using rhetorical strategies. You will identify the strategies that a
particular visual argument employs and discuss the purposes and motivations behind the strategies used. Discuss in detail the logical
appeal/s used (ethos, logos, pathos). Also, who is the target audience and why?
Format
The final draft should be 4-6 pages long (this does not include a cover page or Works cited page), typed, double-spaced and carefully
proofread. The paper should follow MLA format and have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Should you elect to use sources in
this paper, please make sure they are of credible nature. No more than three sources are allowed.
