What are some of the challenges you see in providing human services that truly address our diversities? I feel that some of the challenges wll be when I provide human services as an african american woman is to try to remain non judgemental towards others..the communication because I know that indivduals of another race will need my assistance and yes I was taught to love and respect our fellow man or woman…(can you answer this question for me..I feel that there are more challenges facing me as a human service worker that addresses our diversities? I need this answer to make sense to my professor when she reads it on the discussion board..if you can reflect back in the book Introduction to human services 8th edition Mandell and Schram I would really appreciate it…I was an intern at Matts house, myself and a supervisor visited Grace House to speak to men who are HIV positive…the stories those men told made me wanted to cry, one male in particular was latino who was HIV positive, he tried to go to a restaurant in our city and people shunned him didnt want to talk to him at all…the customers were whispering..the moral point of this story is..he’s a human being and deserves respect just like you and me despite his illness and yes racism played a part in this story…even though I was a intern at Matt’s House, I’m afraid that my inexperience with population will become another challenge while addressing our diversities…Question #2-what are your thoughts on Maria’s story when she addressed diversities:When working the human services field there are so many opportunities/trainings offered for cultural competency and diversity education. I do believe that some of us attend these trainings looking to become more educated and more aware of those around us however there are always a selected few who become self-defensive and combative. There are certain social topics that ignite passion and diversity is definitely one of them. Presenters speak to the audience with general knowledge and a general fact base however I always here rumblings of he/she does not know what they are talking about. Question#3-What is your response/thoughts to jennifer’s answer regarding diversities: I think the biggest issue is not being well rounded enough. I worry that someone would come to me with an issue and I would be at a total loss as what to do to help them. It is said you can not feel what someone else is feeling until you walked a mile in their shoes and that worries me. Will the clients feel as if I am not qualified enough to help them or lead them in the right direction? Will they feel that there is an issue because of the race that I am versus the race that they are? Does it matter to them that I am a female and can not relate 100% to male issues? There are so many factors that come into play to have a diverse group of people.
