• essays must be printed and handed in at the correct time and place (see above);
• essays must be anonymous. Student number only – not your name. This is to ensure anonymity and fairness;
• essays must be word-processed, using a readable typeface in a readable size (11-point or over);
• use double or one-and-a-half line spacing (as this is easier to read);
• give page numbers (so that markers can refer to particular pages in their comments on your essay);
• give a word-count (excluding bibliography) at the start or end of the essay;
• essays must be fully referenced, using a sensible and consistent referencing system. If you’re not sure how to give references, look at the format in a recent issue of a reputable journal, and copy that. We’re not bothered about which of the several mainstream referencing systems you use, as long as a sensible one, and is used correctly and consistently. Inadequate or incorrect referencing and/or bibliography will result in the deduction of marks. You can easily miss passing this course simply by getting your references wrong. (Please note that in student essays, you don’t need to ask authors for permission when citing or quoting unpublished work which says something like ‘not to be quoted without author’s permission’ on it.);
• keep footnotes to a minimum, aside from references. Using footnotes for substantive points is a bad habit to get into. With care, most footnotes can be incorporated into the text, or simply left out.
• do not put quotations in italics. Textbooks do this; published research does not. Italics are harder to read and should be used only for an author’s emphasis, or for emphasis that you wish to add. Indented quotations – typically, for quotations of 40 words or over, in a separate paragraph indented from the edge – should not have quotation marks at the start and end.
• new paragraphs should have a tab at the start of each paragraph and/or an extra line between the paragraphs. Communicating your ideas clearly is a key part of an essay (and academic work more generally), and physical presentation is one part of this.
• you are allowed to say ‘I’ and ‘me’ if you like. Some academics do not like this, but for ARP we welcome it, not least because we are encouraging you to tell us what you think – and it is easier to see this if you are explicit that this is your idea. For example, ‘I would argue that X’ is clearly your argument, whereas ‘it could be argued that X’ may or may not be your argument. (Nonetheless, please see above the comment about not including overly personal comments. It is fine to say ‘I would criticise Smith for arguing X’, but it is not fine to say ‘I could not make head or tail of Smith’s argument’.)
