Discuss this statement from Peter Hunt’s article Instruction and Delight with reference to Philip Pullman’s novel Northern Lights.
Student Notes:
These notes suggest some possible approaches you might want to take in response to the TMA question, and are intended to help you get started. They are not designed to be used as an essay plan, and you may well want to take a different approach.
If you completed Activities 1.2 and 1.3 in the Study Guide, they will have given you a good starting point for thinking critically about the purpose of children’s literature, why these might be debated and the tensions around them. It is essential to make reference to the critical reading in Block 1, as well as use evidence from the novel Northern Lights. The first four articles in Reader 1, Approaches and Territories, will give you plenty of material to draw on, although you are not expected to summarize them or to recap the whole history of children’s literature in order to address the TMA question. Make sure that you reread the quotation in the TMA question in its original context on page 14 of the Reader.
Turning to your set book Northern lights, Activity 1.15 in the Study Guide may help you begin to identify the features you will refer to in your discussion of the quoted statement. Does Northern Lights give the appearance of being innocent children’s book? What evidence can you point to, if any, of intrusion or control? Who is controlling and for what purpose? Is there evidence of intrusion and, if so, who or what is intruded upon? Are there any elements that could be considered sinister? The statement suggests that these features are not obvious but lurk behind something else. What might they be lurking behind? Remember, you should not try to summarise the plot but select detailed evidence from the book to support your discussion.
In your introduction, you may want to consider to what extent children’s books are, or have been considered, innocent. Your conclusion could summarise how far, in your view, based on the arguments and evidence you have put forward, the statement reflects an extreme position or accurately captures the specific characteristics of children’s literature.
