TURNITIN
Plagiarism-checking software
The University uses software called Turnitin, which enables you to see the extent to which your writing uses the work of others and which checks for plagiarism. The FDN111 online unit has a link to Turnitin and you are expected to submit your assessments to Turnitin. Please note that when you or your Unit Coordinator submit assignments electronically to Turnitin, a copy of your work is retained on the database to check collusion and future plagiarism. The University has a legal agreement with Turnitin that it will not share or reproduce student work in any form. See the following website for information on Turnitin:
Turnitin is a good tool to use to check your referencing and improve your writing.
There is no particular percentage that students should aim for in their Turnitin report.
The report simply identifies if the work and ideas of others have been used – it is the student’s responsibility to then check that it has been correctly acknowledged (referenced). Students are encouraged to view their reports and make adjustments to their work as required. Students can resubmit to Turnitin at any time after editing their work.
Essay requirements
Please note the following requirements that apply to essays in this unit:
? Essays must be prepared using Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx or .rtf).
? Submissions must include an Electronic Coversheet, Assessment Criteria Sheet and your essay in a SINGLE file.
? A word document containing an electronic Coversheet, Assessment Criteria Sheet and a blank page for you to commence your essay can be downloaded
via the ?Assessments? link
? Submitted files must be correctly named using the convention: Unit code, assignment number, last name, first initial and student number. E.g.
ISU111Essay2ChongJ12345678 for student JunChong.
? Essays submitted as more than one document or that are incorrectly named will be returned to the student for correction and may be marked as ?late? if
resubmitted after the due date.
? All assignments must use the Chicago referencing style.
? It is the responsibility of students to keep a copy of all assignments submitted for assessment.
? Resubmission of any piece of assessment will be at the discretion of the Unit
Coordinator.
? Students are to ensure their essays have been submitted to Turnitin and a report generated by the time they submit their assignment to their tutor for
marking. Students must note that it may take several hours to days for a report to be generated. Therefore to prevent incurring a penalty for late submission, students are advised to submit their essay to Turnitin several days before the assignment is due to allow time for editing if required.
