The major components of the Critical Engagement Response (CER) are:
• The Summary (this will make up approximately 1/3 of your post) must:
o Restate the author’s thesis statement in your own words
o Briefly map the author’s “moves”
o Identify key examples/evidence the author uses
• The Response (this will make up approximately 2/3 of your post) must:
o Evaluate the author’s rhetoric (i.e., has the author sufficiently established his/her ethos? Is the logos of the argument fallacious? How much has s/he relied on pathos? Etc.). Please refer to pp. 202-209 in EAC.
o Interpret the reading “with the grain” and “against the grain” (for more information, see p. 214-215 in EAC):
• With the Grain: Contributes additional points that affirm the author’s position. Considers personal experiences or knowledge that help confirm the author’s claims.
• Against the Grain: Contributes points that challenge the author’s position. Considers counter-examples or personal experiences that complicates the author’s claims.
• The Revision:
o To receive your final grade, you will need to read your peers’ feedback and use it to revise your CER.
o The revision must be submitted as an attachment (.doc or .docx files only) to “Assignments” > “CER Final Revised Draft” on Blackboard exactly one week after the CER blog post.
o In the “comments” section of the submission, you must describe the revisions you made. This can be informal but must be detailed.
