This assignment requires you to consider your own life experience growing up – in particular reflecting on your early years of life within the period from 0-5 years old. You should incorporate some of the key concepts introduced in the lectures and tutorials around such things as gender, identity, family, culture, environment, education, health, religion and language. You might like to incorporate photographs, movies or drawings from your past (ie, Kinder photographs, a picture or map of your house/street), stories from other family members, draw on news, music other popular cultural icons from that period to put your story into context. The assignment should be presented as biographical essay written in a narrative/story style.
This assignment supports you to reflect on your own life experience to consider similarities and differences between your early years and being a child now growing up in contemporary society. This will engage you to consider if/or how society has changed over time and for you to consider and critique the texts and images of children we now see in contemporary texts, media and other forms of popular culture. You will have the chance to consider how such things as gender, sexuality, race, religion, education, health, ability, ethnicity were constructed in society during your childhood and how this may have influenced your identity and how you now come to see yourself.
PROCESS
In order to complete this assignment you need to:
• Conduct some research around contemporary society during the time when you were in your early years and compare this to life in 2013. The research should focus on the social norms and values around child rearing, families, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, children’s health etc… and to consider how these may have influenced your ‘story’ and the story of children in the early years now.
• Conduct research around your own life history, using any forms of media (photographs, stories, videos, memories) to help create your ‘story’. You may have limited memories of your own so you may need to ask other family members to help you fill in some of the details.
• Write a biography in narrative style to discuss and reflect your own childhood, in particular the early years between 0-5 years old. You may like to illustrate your biography by using photographs or other forms of media.
• Your story should conclude with a short reflection on some key differences you have identified between your own story and the story of children growing up in 2013 in Australian society utilising the reading literature and contemporary texts (i.e. newspaper articles, magazines, internet)
