This semester you have been developing the critical reasoning and writing skills necessary to construct well-organized, well-supported, engaging essays. You have practiced exercising intellectual honesty and skepticism to arrive at a deeper understanding of an issue. Our final assignment gives you the opportunity to showcase those skills and to bring them to bear on the world outside the classroom.
Premise/Topic
Imagine you’re finishing your Writing 140 portfolio and your dorm mates across the hall have decided to throw an impromptu party. You find the noise unbearably distracting, but don’t want to leave because this is your dorm: you shouldn’t be forced to work elsewhere. But it’s their space as well, and they’re allowed to do things there too. You could be confrontational and demand they stop. You could be cooperative and cut a deal with them to buy yourself some quiet time. You could be strictly law-abiding and turn the issue over to the authorities (such as your RA). You could disengage from the problem by putting headphones on and cranking the volume. Or you could renege on your individual responsibilities and join the party. The circumstances of dorm life make conflicts like this inevitable; conflicts which are the result of underlying civic consciousness that philosophers have always struggled with.
What this example shows us is that day-to-day life in a society may be looked at through many different lenses, none of which are ever used independently. Whether we do it individually or as part of a group, we reply to complex circumstances with civic consciousness informed by religion, ideology, gender, sexual orientation, etc. The key is deciding how our consciousness of ourselves as private and civic subjects is appropriate for a given social circumstance.
If the social issues we’ve examined this semester tell us anything, it’s that a one-size-fits-all approach to civic interaction, like any complex concept, is insufficient in the face of lived experience. Sometimes civic contexts request independent action, as in the case of voting; at other times, such action is required, such as serving jury duty or paying taxes. Citizens opposed to community-minded pursuits can—and often do—benefit from those pursuits, just as communitarian endeavors often benefit from individual actions. We might say, then, that different civic consciousness emerge to best confront a given set of circumstances, even something as basic as how loud a dorm floor can be. The good citizen strives to find the best response within ever-varied (and frequently revised) attitudinal mixtures to the infinite scenarios of the civic.
