Witchcraft Trials
Do you have the conviction that anyone who has been charged with being a witch can receive a fair trial? Your ideas should be based on the presentation of the following ideas: Johannes Nider, Innocent VIII and Malleus Maleficarum’s excerpt. You should also state why or why not you support the idea.
1. Francis Bacon endeavors to equip us with strategies and means to evade the trap that revolves around thinking that is, in every way, conventional. He categorizes these particular traps as Metaphorical, compares them to “idols” of the marketplace, theater, the cave and tribe. He says that if we know this, we can avoid the mind’s inclination to always settle for grooves that are both familiar and comfortable. Okay, but at some particular juncture we have to acknowledge the essence of experience as far as learning truth is concerned. We simply can not remain cautious of the idols.
2. We are led straight to a dead end when we follow Hume’s arguments. We are only getting a familiarity of our own impressions as far as senses are concerned. We do not get emotional experiences that revolve the world. He puts forward the argument- couched in Hume’s Fork, the analytical/synthetic/nonsense schema- and that there is other form of “self” other than our own sense impressions. He goes on to say that there is no spiritual or magical “self” behind our lives. We are simply the movies of ourselves and no exterior factors influence our levity. This means that there is such thing as “I” besides the fact that it only encompasses sense impressions that are present and sense impressions belonging to past memory. His arguments also put it forward that we cannot say with absolute certainty that there is another world that surrounds us because we can not verify that there other beings that possess qualities that are both unique and primary. This creates some kind of comedown. Can you really free yourself from the locus that Hume’s ideas are putting us into? Can provide substantial evidence that there is really a world out there? Can you prove that another “self” that does not represent our impressions?
