Between the end of the Civil War and the end of World War I, women’s involvement in activism and politics not only increased, but changed drastically. Throughout this time period, women fought for multiple causes including the right to vote, the end to child labor, and the prohibition of alcohol. In doing so, women asserted themselves into the political sphere, a place previously restricted to only men. Their entrance into politics coincided with the changing social and cultural climate of Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, and Progressivism, culminating in new legislation meant to both protect and guarantee Constitutional rights to all. Women argued that with the right to vote, they could better protect not only themselves, but also children all across America, something, they asserted, that men had failed to do without women’s activism.

Then, write an essay of no more than three pages that includes at least three documents and strives to answer the following question:
What other reasons did women utilize in the fight for suffrage, or was enacting protective legislation the only reason women sought the right to vote? Was it a mixture of both? Also, how do the concepts of liberty and freedom influence the movement?

Papers must be double-spaced and in 12-point type with no extra spaces between paragraphs. Papers also must be in Times New Roman as a font with standard 1-inch margins. Pages must be numbered. Papers must be submitted to the course’s Blackboard site by 1:00 pm on July 6, 2012. A hard copy must also be turned in during class that day. The Blackboard submission and the hard copy are both required to consider the assignment turned in. Both copies must also be the final draft. Points will be lost if the Blackboard submission is an earlier version of the hard copy turned in during class. No late papers will be accepted.
