3 x 5 Essay Format
General Description:
A 3 X 5 essay has a creative title and contains three themes expressed in five paragraphs. The first paragraph is a short introduction which contains a three-theme thesis statement. The middle three paragraphs develop the three main themes, and the final paragraph is a short conclusion which restates the title of the essay in the last sentence. Sub-titles are strictly prohibited in the short essay.
Introductory Paragraph Description:
The introductory paragraph should provide some brief historical background and describe the ?time? and ?place? of the topic. Introducing the essay with a provocative quote, definition, or question is encouraged. It is essential that the introduction contain a three-theme thesis statement which outlines the three major themes (main points) that are going to be discussed in the body of the essay.
Main Paragraph(s) Description:
The three main theme paragraphs must each have a topic sentence, a clincher, and relevant, specific details. A topic sentence is a general statement that expresses the main idea of the paragraph. A clincher is a general statement that concludes a paragraph. It usually restates the main idea (the topic sentence) of the paragraph in a creative way. The details are the examples that support the topic sentence. They should be specific statements that are interesting, relevant to the topic, and expressed clearly in grammatically sound sentences.
Sample Outline for History Essay (3X5)
1. Introduction (one paragraph)
2. Main Theme#1 (one paragraph)
3. Main Theme #2 (one paragraph)
4. Main Theme #3 (one paragraph)
5. Conclusion (one paragraph)
Concluding Paragraph Description:
The concluding paragraph should briefly restate the three main themes in a creative way. The last sentence in the conclusion should restate the title of the essay.
A relevant position/thesis is clearly stated. Excellent recall of factual content; organized in a purposeful and effective manner. Position is supported with thoroughly developed details and insightful conclusions are drawn. Expression is clear and fluent with few flaws in communication.

8. The essay will be assessed according to the Essay Marking Criteria. A response should conform to each and every descriptor within a particular scale point. A polished piece of writing is expected that demonstrates thoughtful reflection and research.
9. The essay must be 1000 words minimum, 1500 words maximum.
10. MLA footnote/endnote notations and bibliography style must be used for this research paper. Go to this document for an explanation of MLA style. Remember that any ideas or quotations that are not your own must be footnoted or end noted.
11. A bibliography is required with the following MINIMUM entries: 2 textbook etries, 5 library book entries from a local library, and 5 internet entries.
12. A thesis statement must be sent to your teacher for approval before you begin writing your essay. Please hand it in early to maximize your research time.
