You are at the point where instructions need to be developed to accompany the product. The typical situation would be that you will present the product to your boss (your Instructor) along with the instructions for a test audience to use. You are confident that your team has done a good job and you want to convince your boss of this fact. To accompany the hand off to your boss, you will produce 2 documents:
• A cover memo to your boss, explaining the product with some persuasive language about your confidence in the product
• A set of instructions to accompany the product for the test audience
First, decide on a suitable topic, using our text as a guide, your own experience with using many products and services during your lifetime, or perhaps your own career field as inspiration. And be creative (with the caveat that the instructions must ‘work’).
Then, write a set of step-by-step instructions for performing a procedure or using a simple mechanism or product. The directions should be appropriate for someone who has no prior experience with the mechanism or the task. Material should be selected and arranged to suit the reader’s needs. Please, no recipes of any kind are acceptable for this assignment.
Instructions usually contain the following elements:
? Depending on the subject, instructions must be preceded by appropriate hazard/safety notations
? An introduction for the intended audience that provides an overview of the topic and/or procedure to be performed
? Necessary general information or background information (such as a list of required materials, for example) to complete the task successfully
? Detailed instructions for accomplishing the task(s), listed as discreet steps in the process
? Graphics to help clarify the instructions
? An appropriate conclusion comment
FORMAT
Prepare this document as follows:
• The instructions must be at least 20 overall steps in length, each describing a single action to be performed. Subdivide the instructions into subsets of no more than 4 – 5 steps so as to not fatigue the reader.
• The instructions must contain at least 3 graphics that are integrated into and referred to in the steps – that is, the graphics cannot be purely decorative. The graphics must also be properly labeled and referred to, as well as properly placed, using appropriate design considerations for the overall document.
• The instructions document should be at least 2 – 3 pages in length.
• Review the Writer’s Checklist from page 574 of our book that is included here, to ensure that you have covered all the necessary parts of the assignment. This completed form should accompany the assignment.
As this process should be explained in your own words, you should not use outside sources in preparing your set of instructions. If graphics are obtained from any source other than ‘free’ art sites, they must have a citation. You may use pictures that you personally take for this purpose.
After you have completed the Instructions, prepare your Cover Memo, as we have previously learned. Prepare this document as follows:
• The document should be a formal, internal memo to your company. You are free to make up the company name, product line, logos and art work, etc. However, do not use the name of an existing company.
• The document should be written to your boss (your Instructor).
• The nature of the document should be somewhat informative (you’re telling your boss about the product), but also somewhat persuasive, as you want to gain his/her enthusiasm for the product.
• The document should be at least a page in length.
• Complete the Audience Profile Sheet as it applies to the Cover Memo only and submit it with your draft and final copy.
EVALUATION

2. The document will be evaluated according to the checklists on p. 385 (Memos) and p. 574 (Instructions) of your text. The following criteria will also be considered:
? Format: Are the documents formatted according to assignment requirements and standard business practices?

? Creativity: Has creativity been used to undertake and complete the assignment?
