1. Explain the context in which your text can be located. You can refine your discussion of context by drawing on theorisations of context, for example, Faircloughs (1992) sociocultural practices and discursive practices, or Hallidays (Halliday & Hasan, 1985) context of culture and context of situation. You could also look at more in-depth theorizations of context such as Duranti and Goodwins (1992) or Blommaerts (2001) but the key point is to provide some background by way of a discussion of context to the text I have chosen to analyze.
2. Introduce the text and briefly outline its content, as well as its purpose and audience (as far as you can tell). You could also note the texts genre.
3. Explain the approach you are adopting to analysis at a theoretical level. This might involve a discussion of how you understand key terms, such as text, genre and discourse. It might also involve an explanation of the key tenets, principles or features of the approach(es) you are adopting (e.g. Laclau & Mouffes discourse theory (Gees critical discourse analysis (see Locke, 2004) or any other approach. Note: if you use, for example, Faircloughs CDA, you dont need to use all aspects of the theory (or all aspects of the method); rather, select those that seem to have most relevance and traction in relation to the text you are analyzing.
4. Explain the approach you are adopting to analysis at a methods (tools) level. Explain the key idea behind any tools you adopt, for example, if you are focusing on lexical choices (word choice) or lexical chains (strings of signifiers) or modality (degree of commitment to certainty, truth or obligation), explain why this aspect is significant in analyzing and understanding the text. This section will likely overlap with 3, given the mutual interanimation of theory and method, so you may need to make a choice about the section in which you want to discuss a feature or idea.
