The paper that you will be writing is my recital program notes. I am a graduate student majoring in classical voice and this paper will be used for the program notes of my graduate concert.
First of all, please see three files attached: “Recital Program Order”, “Set Instruction” and “Example”.
The first file, “Recital Program Order” shows the order of my concert including information about the names of the songs, the writers’ names, the composers’ names and where songs are from. For instance, the first song is Sound the Trumpet, which is written by Tate and composed by Henry Purcell. For another instance, under Intermission, three songs that are written by Metastasio, Pepoli and Pepoli respectively are all composed by Rossini, and the three songs are from a music book Serate Musicali.
The program consists of 6 parts: Sound the Trumpet, a set of four German songs, a set of three songs by Roger Quilter, a set of three songs by Gabriel Faure, and after Intermission, three songs by Rossini, and Quando men vo by Puccini. A set which has more than two songs (so exclude Sound the Trumpet and Quando men vo) must have a theme in common that makes the songs a set. For the second set of four German songs, I picked a theme of “flower”, which represents the happiest moment after a long time of patience, so you have to use this theme. For other sets than the second set with the theme “flower”, please do some research and be creative to connect the songs in a theme and catch readers’ attention. The second file, “Set Instruction” will tell you the criteria that you have to be concerned about, but you could of course go beyond it. There is an example of a set on the second page, so please take a careful look.
Finally, the last file, “Example” shows you a brief instruction to write the notes and a complete program notes example, and this is how your writing will look like. Though this was considered as exceptional program notes, you could modify the format to some extent as long as you can convince that it is necessary and more efficient. Generally, each paragraph or set has 15 to 20 lines: The first 3 to 4 lines for general information about composer, next 1 to 2 lines for writer, 2 to 3 lines for the link between the writer and the composer (why the composer picked the writing?) next 5 to 6 lines for the theme of the set, next 3 to 4 lines for musical analysis, background information, some historic facts and miscellaneous interesting information, and 2 to 3 lines for wrap-up. Since the first set consists of only one song of Sound the Trumpet, the length of the paragraph could be relatively short, but please exceed 10 lines.
Book sources are absolutely preferred, but you can use web sources as long as they are less than 5. Please be very professional and clear, but do not use SAT words too much. And please be advised that the paper should be analytical, and should also catch the readers’ eyes and interest. Thank you in advance for your effort and work.
