Part of being a professional nurse includes thinking critically about all the factors that influence patient care. The first question of a critical thinker is often WHY? A professional nurse is responsible for knowing why a certain intervention is being used for a patient and researching why and how it is effective (or not).
This course offers you an opportunity to use critical thinking as you research an issue you have identified at the facility where you are doing preceptor hours.
Please use the following guidelines to help you in this activity:
1. Think about what you are experiencing during your preceptor hours. What kinds of nursing interventions or activities are used with patients? How are those interventions used? How do they influence patient outcomes? Why?
2. Identify one or two nursing practice activities/interventions that you would like to learn more about. Sometimes it is beneficial to begin with more than one idea in order to keep an open mind about what kind of research you may find.
3. Research the issue(s) that you have identified. Look at nursing peer-reviewed journals for information on your topic(s). If you have chosen more than one, identify the one that has the most compelling research for this activity.
4. Read at least 3 research articles from nursing peer-reviewed journals relating to your topic. You will be required to cite at least 2 journal articles for your activity paper, so it is necessary to read more than you will ultimately ?need.?
5. Write a 2 page paper reflecting your research about the issue. Follow the grading rubric to guide you in paper content.
