Although Nietzsche predates Merleau-Ponty, we began with phenomenology because of its (intuitive) fidelity to our lived experience. Nietzsche takes a critical perspective of our lived experience, casting doubt upon its veracity. In fact, Nietzsche is critical of subjectivity writ large. Why does he take such a critical approach to human subjectivity? In these weeks, we will look at Nietzches scepticism towards lived subjectivity, which paves the way for a different notion of the body, and bodily agency. We will develop an understanding of his critique of morality, and consider his key notions of drive/force, and the will to power. We will look at the notion of custom, the morality of custom, questions of habit in the body and the question of agency, whether it is to be found in subjectivity, the body or relations of force. We will also look at his notions of active and reactive force, slave morality and overcoming.
