. This is a writing intensive class, so you should carefully look at my style sheet before submitting your paper. These writing tips are requirements, not suggestions, and those who ignore them will receive a lower grade. I certainly don’t expect a perfectly written paper (which I’m not capable of writing either), but I hope to see evidence that you have read the comments that I made on your first paper when I grade your second and third papers.
In your essays you should provide an analysis of the assertions in the news article using concepts that you have learned in class. You may want to begin your paper with a one paragraph summary of the article, but don’t spend too much time summarizing the article. If you are having trouble getting started, you might begin by making notes about the variables discussed in the article. Often articles will argue that one economic factor is influencing another. For instance, inflation might impact interest rates. You can then explain the underlying reasons why this would occur. The textbook can help here. Feel free to offer other explanations for the events discussed in the article. You are even free to criticize an assertion in the article if you think it is wrong. I will grade you more on the quality of your argument, than on whether I happen to think it is right or wrong. I do not provide feedback on rough drafts, but I am happy to give you advice and/or answer any questions you have.
You should never paraphrase statements made in the article. Either provide an exact quotation (with quotation marks), or make the point in your own words. The most common mistake made by students in the past is to just summarize the article that they have attached. The second most common mistake is when students focus so much on their own opinions that they virtually ignore what the article is saying. Try to be somewhere in the middle. For instance, try not to just say The article says X . . . I agree. Instead, try to say something like The article says X . . . and what that means is . . . Imagine your are explaining it to a non-EC/FI student. Again, try to use class concepts in your analysis.
