This is a THESIS essay. Here are the instructions/ "…a sound heart is a surer guide than an ill-trained conscience..Huckleberry Finn is a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision, and conscience suffers
a defeat" – Mark Twain, lecture notes and notebook #36
First of all, do you agree with Twain? Given the way the book ends, does Huck’s "sound heart" actually and totally defeat and redirect his "ill-trained conscience" or would Twain have been totally correct if the book ended after chapter 31?
For this essay, you will have to successfully show what Twain means about his novel. To do this, you will have to establish how Huck’s "deformed conscience" was developed by examining the society in which he lived. Then, you will have to show how the forces of his "sound heart worked to defeat or failed to defeat his "deformed conscience."
Suggested target sections: Ch.2,5,15,16,17,18,24,31,40, The last.
