This talk will present a research project that has been underway for two years, and that starts from the premise that translation is at the basis of much international exchange. It studies how French and English Canadian texts of the late 20th century have moved into Portuguese and Spanish – into Latin America – , how selections have been made, how funds and subsidies are made available and distributed, who makes decisions about what to translate and how to do so. While the "exporting" government plays a role in all this, the random exchanges driven by friendships, writerly collaborations, accidental encounters seem to be just as important. My focus will be on the two big players in this regard: Mexico and Brazil – and their production will be contrasted with the more "industrialized" and also more subsidized materials that are prepared in Spain for Latin America. Ultimately, though, the question of impact is the most interesting. Can the impact of translations be assessed? How do we measure this?
