Great Unsolved Canadian Mystery Assignment: Your objective is to solve one of the Great Unsolved Canadian Mysteries posted on the website:
http://www.canadianmysteries.ca/en/index.php
Length is 5-7 pages, typed, double spaced, standard margins. It must include a title page, end/footnotes and bibliography following proper form, though these pages are not counted in your page count. Put your TA’s name on your assignment. If you do not, your assignment will not be marked. Begin first by carefully consulting “how to read a primary source” (see below).
You must choose one of the 9 mysteries fitting into the time period of our course (Modern Canada). These include:
• Aurore: The Mystery of the Martyred Child
• Jerome: the Mystery of Baie Sainte-Marie
• Who Killed William Robinson?
• Who Discovered Klondike Gold?
• Redpath Mansion Mystery
• Death on a Painted Lake- Tom Thomson
• Heaven and Hell on Earth: The Massacre of the Black Donnellys
• Death of a Diplomat: Herbert Norman and the Cold War
• Explosion on the Kettle Valley Line: The Death of Peter Verigin
You can access the mysteries by going to the website and under “quick access” select the mystery from the above list. Each mystery has its own range of questions to be answered, with one key overall question (ie. “Who done it?”). Your essay should address as many of the questions as possible. By reading many of the primary documents or pieces of “evidence” for each mystery, you will be able to address the questions posed. The primary documents for each mystery can generally be found under “Archives.” If you are unsure of the difference between a primary or secondary source, consult your TA. You must make direct reference to at least 8 different primary documents posted for your mystery. You must also make reference to at least one of our course textbooks for background context on the time period, region, topic, etc. You DO NOT need to consult any outside sources.
