This assessment comprises of four (4) study questions or short answers related to the material covered in Topics 1-4 of the unit. It focuses on developing your capacities to apply educational psychology and theory to a teaching and learning situation or classroom environment. You are required to draw upon the learning incorporated in the first four topics of the unit and further research to answer the study questions. In answering these questions you will begin to develop your own teaching philosophies about the sort of teacher you would like to be.
Consider an area you would like to teach in – Early Childhood Education, Primary Education or Secondary Education and answer the following questions:
Study Question 1 (linked to topic 1- Expert Teaching)
• After viewing the video Becoming a Teacher (see Blackboard Weekly Learning Module One) and completing the tasks in Module 1, has your perspective changed on what it means to be a teacher? How so?
Consider what makes a good teacher; what sort of knowledge, skills and qualities would a qualified, expert teacher possess?
Study Question 2 (linked to topic 2 – Culture and Community) • Discuss Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model of development and how this
theory could be applied to the school context of your choice.
What are the implications of this theory for teaching and learning? Consider family structure and parenting styles; attachment; peer cultures and friendships; the role of the teacher; society and media.
Study Question 3 (linked to topic 3 – Cognitive Development)
• Choose one of the following theorists and discuss how their theory could be applied to the school context of your choice:
o Piaget
o Vygotsky What are the implications for teaching and learning?
Study Question 4 (linked to topic 4 – Personal, Emotional, Social and Moral Development
• Choose one of the following theorists and discuss how their theory could be applied to the school context of your choice:
o Erikson o Kohlberg

Each study question should be answered in 300-350 words (about one page; a maximum of 350 words, no more) with reference to your textbook and at least one other scholarly resource. Your assignment will be marked according to the extent to which you:
• Demonstrate an understanding of theory and concepts • Show evidence of critical reflection • Apply understandings to future teaching • Inform your discussion of key concepts/ideas through engagement with
academic sources (use APA referencing format) • Present your ideas in a clear, concise and coherent fashion

Read: Chapter 1, pp 1-22 of your textbook – Educational Psychology (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2013).
Consider the different roles that teachers perform – motivator, manager, instructional expert, counsellor, model, leader, reflective professional.

Read: Chapter 2, pp 23-67 of your textbook – Educational Psychology (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2013).
