Analysis and comparison of scholarly articles 30%
In this assignment you are asked to discuss and analyse a small number of scholarly articles that are relevant to your research interest. In light of your analysis you are then asked to develop a research question based on your original area of interest. This exercise is intended to be an introduction to the process of writing a full literature review.
It will be essential to refer to ideas in the articles by using well-chosen, brief quotes from the articles to support your discussion throughout the essay.
Choose 3 articles that are relevant to your research interest and your emerging question. For the purpose of this assignment you should use only empirical articles (ie articles that rely on data or observations for the findings) that have been published within the past 10 years. Position papers and theoretical articles are important in a literature review, but for this assignment you should focus on research articles.
Introduction: As always, begin with an introduction to your essay. In the introduction include a section where you briefly revisit your research interest, as presented for Assignment 1. Re-state your interest in a very few sentences to re-orient the reader. If appropriate, explain (very briefly!) how your thinking has developed since presenting your ideas in the first assignment. Then explain briefly how the articles you have chosen relate to your research interest.
Analysis: For each article, provide a brief overview by describing the type of research, research design, methodological approaches and main findings of each study. Then review and analyse each study by discussing such things as whether the authors’ conclusions were supported by the research findings, whether the research design was appropriate for the research question, etc.
Synthesis of ideas in the articles: After you have discussed the articles separately, explore how the main research findings are related to one another (or not). Compare and contrast the research findings of the articles. Identify any common themes or ideas, and discuss any findings that are different.
Conclusion: Based on your discussion of the articles, you should now be in a position to develop a research question based on the research interest you first stated in Assignment 1. In the conclusion, revisit your research interest and explain briefly how and why your readings have influenced your thinking about this. For example, has your focus shifted, has it narrowed, has it changed completely, or has it remained the same? Then, present a research question based on your original interest, and informed by your readings.
