Our next map is mainly meant as a brainstorming tool for your developing research project. On the basis of your research to date, prepare one map using the ‘Advanced Reasoning’ template representing a major contention from one of your research readings. That is, you cannot use any of our class texts but must use something you have brought to the table. Focus on one reading that you have dug up
for your research project and develop a map with the following elements:
A) A main claim as the contention;
B) Supporting evidence for that claim as reasons and co-premises;
C) Anticipated objections and rebuttals as they are represented in the reading;
D) The basis or bases for each premise and co-premise.
As with Map 8, provide a complete reference for the reading. That is, whose opinions are you representing in each map? This information is no doubt important, and may affect your sense of its veracity and reliability.
Finally, examine your map’s reasons with a critical eye towards fallacies, and indicate if you find one. Remember that you are evaluating arguments as you research them, and that the quality of your evaluation will most certainly be reflected in the quality of
your final research report.
