This assessment item assesses Objectives a and b
Format – submitted as an essay, which should include relevant headings and a list of references.
In the critical review you should describe and compare two events. Clearly state the nature of the events, when and where they were held, whether they were held in a suitable location and any other notable characteristics.
The assessment provides an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the factors that influence event experiences and you should discuss:
?Motivations to attend the event (ie. why you wanted to attend and what you hoped to gain from attending the event)
?Factors that influenced the experiences gained at the event To assist in preparing the assessment, you should read:
• chapters 1, 2 and 7 of the textbook
• the journal article by Fredline and Faulkner (that you study in Week 3)
• other relevant journal articles.
Evidence of your reading (at least three different reference sources two must be refereed) should be included. This should demonstrate the relevance of concepts to the experiences you describe.
You should also conclude by considering the management implications of the experiences – how should this understanding be used when planning a similar event.
You may have attended the event and one of the experiences may relate to your own personal experience. However, it may be based on your interpretation of an event that you have not attended. Relevant material (descriptions, illustrations, maps etc) can be found in academic journals, newspaper and magazine articles and on the web.
The Mental Exercise (pages 204-205) can be used as a guide in thinking about the type of issues to include when explore your chosen events.
