Personal Style Counseling Paper
This paper is an articulation of who you are, what various theories say, and your attempt to
reconcile the two and choose a theory. I want you to spend an equal amount of focus
(practically speaking, focus in this context = page length) on (1) yourself, and (2) various
theoretical approaches. As you explore these two domains, I want you to compare and contrast
various theories to your worldview (the personal). As we have discussed in class, the grand
theories of psychology were informed by the personality/worldview of the theorists who
developed them. As you progress through this program, your eventual theoretical choices will be
greatly influenced by the degree to which the theory resonates with your worldview. This paper
is a formal expression of that.
HOW YOU WILL BE GRADED:
1. Content (40 points). Include the following:
a. Thorough exploration of the personal (worldview, values/beliefs, view of human nature,
conceptualization of pathology and wellness…).
b. Thorough exploration of the theoretical (various theories values/beliefs, view of human
nature, conceptualization of pathology and wellness, techniques of the approach)
c. Evidence that you have considered the similarities/dissimilarities of various theories with
your worldview
d. An articulation of your theory of choice, and why. Eclectic/integrative is not a choice.
2. Composition (10 points). The page requirement is 10 pages, but that is a minimum. Write (at
least) 10 pages (double spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, 1? margins all around), not
including title page and references (you do not need an abstract).
Write in APA (6th edition) style (title page, headings, references, in-text citations, etc.).
There are plenty of resources available to assist with APA style, including the APA manual and
the APA information session, sample paper, and PowerPoint available on our department website.
Be aware of different ways to cite (based on length of quote), but do not rely on quotations to
convey ideas. Use of APA headings is particularly helpful in defining the structure of your
paper. Your paper should reflect graduate level writing skills ? complete sentences, well
developed paragraphs that connect to each other, correct spelling, grammar, and syntax, etc.
For general writing assistance, the writing center is a free resource available to all Monmouth
University students.
5. As with the presentation, I want you to go beyond the Corey book. When discussing various
theories, use journal articles from peer-reviewed sources.
