1.) Significantly Polished Revision of Unit 1
( 4 pages—should meet and exceed the requirements of the Unit 1 Rubric)
Your revision of Unit 1 should be polished version of the original. It is intended to be a solid draft that has seen a rounded degree of attention and revision with an eye not towards total reconstruction as with the Radical Revision below, but toward a complete and cleanly articulated version of your original piece. I expect you to spend considerable energy and attention towards this essay.
Some things to consider with the Significantly Polished Essay:
→ Look carefully at your essay as a whole, and re-organize it so that it flows smoothly and logically.
→ A big part of effective “flow” is effective transitions: do NOT neglect these.
→ Look at the threading of cultural legacy, personal experience, and writing process. How can you tie these further together? How can you draw stronger connections between them?
→ Consider instructor and peer feedback from Unit 1 (on rubric, through peer review)—address as many of these considerations as possible, as they are aimed at revision based on the original structure of Unit 1.
→ Correct any and all surface errors: spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, spacing, format, etc.
→ After you have completely edited the body of your essay, revisit the introduction and conclusion. Make sure that they are informative, engaging and, most importantly, that they effectively introduce and conclude your paper. Does your essay follow through with what you say in the introduction? Does your conclusion effectively wrap up the main points of your essay? Consider these questions as you revise.
2.) Radical Revision of Unit 1 with Works Cited Page
(While there is no page minimum due to the nature of radically revising your work, I want you to spend a significant amount of attention on this component of the Final Portfolio. The final product should reflect that attention.)
Radical means extreme. With this revision, you’re no longer bound to the original Unit 1 assignment and rubric anymore; you are encouraged to change and manipulate this project to meet your writing goals. I want you to add, delete, rearrange, and re-see your work.
The first component of your Radical Revision will be an Audience Revision. You are no longer writing with me (your teacher) as your audience. Instead, you will pick a new (and appropriate) audience to write toward. You will make adjustments in the text to speak to that audience directly. How will your purpose change based on this audience? How will your language change based on this audience? The definition of your chosen audience should be distinct. I should be able to pick out the audience, and your changes with ease.
The second component of your Radical Revision extends beyond who you are writing for, and considers the way in which you write toward that audience. Think about the ways in which your chosen audience, and community might lead you to the types of revision here. Below is a list of some types of radical revision that can be combined with your adjustment of audience for different effects. Consider the integration of at least two or three of these, depending on the scale and scope of your revisions.
→ Purpose/Intent Revision (ex: changing from writing a mandatory assignment to an encouraging, inspiring essay for others, etc.)
→ Genre Revision (ex: turning the essay project into a pamphlet promoting literacy in a poorly funded school district, or a newspaper article offering suggestions for how parents might engage their children in reading and writing, etc.) Make sure this is relevant to your material, and thoroughly considered.
→ Point of View Revision (ex: first-person to third-person, third-person to first-person, etc.)
→ Tone, Voice, or Mood Revision (ex: telling personal experiences through the voice of a different person, serious tone becomes funny, writing from a different perspective, etc.)
→ Content Revision (ex: adding or deleting entire sections, etc.)
In addition to your Radical Revision project, you will submit at Works Cited page for your secondary research. This should include 1 source that acts as a model text, cited in the most current MLA formatting.
