By now, you have completed the two smaller case study projects, based on your choice of the original cases of psychological disorders, which included generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance abuse disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. These two smaller case study projects will all be synthesized into a comprehensive case study of the disorder you chose and will also include some additional components.
The Final Project should be written in correct APA format, with a title page, abstract, correct citation, and a list of references at the end. Students should use a 12 pt. font, double-spaced, in either Ariel or Times New Roman font. Refer to the grading rubric in your syllabus for word count requirements. Each of your earlier case studies must have included at least 3 additional resources, other than the text. Your final, comprehensive case study must include at least 8 resources (in total), other than the text or course materials. The internet sources should be credible. You should not use sites such as Wikipedia (or other such internet sites in which basically anyone can post information) but should be from acceptable psychological or medical societies, such as the National Institute of Health, Web MD
Directions for Completing the Final Project Comprehensive Case Study
PART I: INTRODUCTION OF THE DISORDER. NEW ADDITION TO THE CASE STUDY PROJECT:
As you did with the smaller case studies, you will use material from the text, but also research both the Kaplan Library and Internet for additional information. You must have at least 2 additional resources, other than the text in the introduction of the study. The introduction to your case study should address the following:
I. Introduction of the Disorder.
In this part of the paper, you will answer the following issues questions:
Describe the disorder of your choice (i.e., what are the symptoms, how does the disorder manifest, etc)
What is the background of the disorder—how did it first become known as a psychological disorder
How is the disorder classified in the DSM-IV?
What are the ways that this disorder has been studied, (i.e., developmental research, twin studies, family studies, adoption studies, experimental research)
How does the original case tie in with what you have learned of the background, DSM-IV criteria, and the research that has been conducted on this disorder?
PART II: COMPLETED IN UNIT 4, (PART 1) OF THE CASE STUDY PROJECT
This will be integrated into the paper. Students should provide a smooth transition from the introduction into Part II of the case study and may choose to expand on the following questions that were previously addressed:
II. Biological aspects of the disorder.
What neurotransmitter(s) have been linked to this disorder and how do they influence behavior?
What medical (medications) treatments (if any) are used to treat this disorder and what is their effect on the neurotransmitter(s) that are involved?
What is known about the genetic contributions to this disorder—what does the research suggest?
Are brain abnormalities indicated in this disorder? Is so, what influence do they have on this disorder
For this part, you also introduced how the original case fit in with the biological/genetic influences on this disorder.
PART III: COMPLETED IN UNIT 7, (PART 2) OF THE CASE STUDY PROJECT
This will be integrated into the paper. Students should provide a smooth transition from Part II into Part II of the case study and may choose to expand on the following questions that were previously addressed.
III. Environmental aspects of the disorder
What are some of the environmental influences that have been investigated in the disorder of your choice? Which of these influences do researchers feel is most important?
Are the environmental influences thought to have more of an impact in this disorder than biological influences or is genetics and biology most important?
What kinds of environmental and biological interactions have been researched on this disorder?
For this part, you also introduced how the original case fit in with the environmental influences on this disorder.
PART IV: COMPLETED IN UNITS 4 and 7, (PART 3) OF THE CASE STUDY PROJECT.
This will be integrated into the paper. Students should provide a smooth transition from Part III into Part IV of the case study and may choose to expand on the following questions that were previously addressed.
IV. Treatment Approaches
What does the research say about medical interventions for this particular treatment, such as prescription medication, ECT, or psychosurgery?
What does the research say about psychological or behavioral treatments?
What is the most effective treatment for this particular disorder and why?
Can the disorder be effectively treated using only one approach or is it more effective to combine approaches. How would you combine treatment plans for the disorder you chose?
Which of the treatment approach would you recommend to the person in the original case description?
PART V: CONCLUSION. NEW ADDITION TO THE CASE STUDY PROJECT
As you did with the introduction to the case study, you will use material from the text, but also research both the UAH library and Internet for additional information. You must have at least 2 additional resources, other than the text in the conclusion of the study. The conclusion to your case study should address the following:
V. Conclusion
What psychological model is best applied to understanding and treating this particular disorder (i.e., psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, cognitive, etc)
Using the applied model of your choice, explain your rational for why this model is most useful in explaining and treating the disorder
What does the future hold for this particular disorder. For example, what new medications are currently being developed? Are there any new psychosocial treatments that have recently been developed and used.
What does the future hold for the person in the original case, based on what you have learned about the future of this disorder?
